SEO for export business: how buyers search and what to build
Key takeaways
- Buyers search by product. Product name, role and country are the core keywords [1].
- One product, one page. A long list gives Google little to show for any single product.
- Specs are search terms too. Phrases such as "turmeric powder specification for export" appear in Google India's autocomplete.
- Links are earned. Google's spam policies treat bought links as spam [4].
- Nobody can guarantee a ranking. Google says so directly [3].
How do buyers search for suppliers?
CBI says buyers often use search engines to find new suppliers. It lists the essential keywords as the product name and words like "exporter", "producer" and "supplier", with your country [1].
Three patterns matter for a food exporter:
| Pattern | Example | The page that answers it |
|---|---|---|
| Product + role + country | turmeric powder supplier India | Your product page |
| Product + specification | turmeric powder specification for export | The specs on your product page, or a downloadable sheet |
| Your company name | the name on your quotation | Your home page and Google listing |
The third pattern is the one most exporters forget. Every buyer who gets your quotation can search your name. Make sure a verified Google listing and your own site appear first. Our spec sheet library shows how the second pattern looks in practice.
Which pages does an exporter need?
Keep the site small and clear:
- Home: what you export, and where from.
- One page per product or product family.
- Company and facility: who you are, what you run and your capacity.
- Quality and certificates: only what you hold today.
- Contact: full address, phone, WhatsApp and a form.
Our guide to the export company website covers each page. Skip the pages built only for search, such as one page for every city in Europe with the same text. They add nothing a buyer can use.
What should each product page get right?
Google's SEO Starter Guide covers the basics [2]. For an exporter, they mean:
- A descriptive URL, such as /products/dehydrated-garlic/, not /page?id=27.
- A unique page title that names the product, the form and "exporter" or "supplier".
- A heading and first paragraph that say what the product is and where it is from.
- Descriptive link text. Write "dehydrated garlic specification", not "click here".
- Real photos with short descriptive alt text.
- Real information. Grade, packing, MOQ and specs are what make the page worth showing.
Write for the buyer first. Repeating a keyword again and again does not help, and it reads badly to a quality manager.
Do you need other languages?
Only if you can answer buyers in that language. A clear English site is a sound start. If you do add a language or regional version, tell Google about the versions, so it can show each person the right one [5].
What about links?
A few real links beat many bought ones. Useful places include trade associations you belong to, fair exhibitor lists and partners who know your work. Google's spam policies count buying or selling links for ranking as link spam [4]. If someone offers you 500 backlinks for a small fee, say no.
How long does SEO take?
Longer than most people hope. Google says some changes take effect in a few hours and others can take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks to judge whether your work had an effect [2].
Measure it with Google Search Console. It is free. It shows the searches that bring up your site, your clicks, and the pages Google has indexed. Check it once a month. The first useful signal is usually impressions on product terms, long before clicks arrive.
How do you judge an SEO provider?
Google's own guidance is direct: no one can guarantee a first-place ranking, and you should be wary of anyone who claims a special relationship with Google [3].
Ask these questions:
- Can you show earlier work and put me in touch with past clients? [3]
- Which products and search terms will you work on first, and why?
- What will you change on the site, and what will you need from me?
- Will the reports use my own Search Console data?
- Will I keep every account and all the content if I stop?
Be careful with unsolicited email. Google warns about SEO firms that write to you out of the blue [3].
