Spices Board registration fees: CRES, renewal and what can stop your renewal
Key takeaways
- The fee is small. Losing the right to renew costs more, because you pay the higher new registration fee.
- Two things can block renewal: no exports in the period, and Quarterly Export Returns not filed on time [1] [2].
- Check the date on your certificate. It lasts three years [2].
- Buyers can look you up. The Board's circular says CRES details are viewable by the public for verification [1].
How much does Spices Board registration cost?
These are the fees in the Board's circular of 1 March 2021 [1]:
| Exporter type | New registration | Renewal |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant | Rs 11,800 (Rs 10,000 + 18% GST) | Rs 8,850 (Rs 7,500 + 18% GST) |
| Manufacturer | Rs 17,700 (Rs 15,000 + 18% GST) | Rs 11,800 (Rs 10,000 + 18% GST) |
Treat these as the last figures we could confirm. We could read this circular on 7 November 2026, but the Board's registration portal wouldn't open for us. The Board's 2024 notification points to a fee document that we haven't seen [2]. Check the amount on the portal before you pay.
Amendments cost extra. The Board's fee table lists Rs 5,000 plus GST for each amendment [3].
Ask consultants to split their quote. We saw very different "Spice Board fees" on consultant websites. Ask how much is the government fee and how much is their service charge.
Merchant or manufacturer?
The difference is whether you process the spices yourself. A manufacturer exporter has a processing unit, and the circular requires extra documents and an inspection [1]:
| Merchant | Manufacturer | |
|---|---|---|
| Base documents | IEC, PAN, GST certificate or declaration, bank report, firm documents | The same |
| Extra documents | None | MSME or Udyam certificate naming the spice, FSSAI or Pollution Control Board certificate for the unit, and any lease deed |
| Inspection | No | Yes, of the processing unit |
| Time stated in the 2021 circular | Within 5 working days | Within 10 working days, after inspection |
Your company name and address should match your IEC, because the Board issues the certificate as per the IEC details [1].
When does your CRES expire?
Read the date on your own certificate. It is valid for three years [2]. The earlier blocks ended on 31 March: the 2017-20 certificates ran until 31 March 2021, and the 2021 certificates until 31 March 2024 [1] [2].
If you renewed in the 2024 round, plan for early 2027. That pattern points to 31 March 2027, but we found no Board notice confirming it yet, so check with your regional office. In 2024, the Board opened renewals through the DGFT portal from 20 February [2].
What can stop your renewal?
Three things are worth checking now, well before the window opens:
- No exports in the period. The Board's 2021 circular says renewal won't be considered. You apply as new, at the new registration fee [1].
- Late Quarterly Export Returns. The 2024 notification says those who haven't filed them on time won't be allowed to renew, and that pending returns must be filed first [2].
- Applying late. The notification asks exporters to file before their certificate expires [2].
Ask your accountant or export manager one question this week: are all our Quarterly Export Returns filed for this block?
Where do you apply, and who do you ask?
Applications now go through the DGFT portal, according to the Board's 2024 notification [2]. The application is online only, and you pay through the payment gateway [1].
Your regional office verifies it. The 2021 circular lists the Unjha office for Gujarat and the Navi Mumbai office for Maharashtra and Goa [1]. Check current contact details on the Board's website.
How does CRES help you with buyers?
It is a fact a buyer can check. The Board's circular says the certificate can be viewed by the public and government agencies for verification [1]. That makes it worth more than a line like "leading exporter".
- Put your CRES number on your website and your quotation.
- Check that the company name matches your IEC, your Google listing and your email signature.
- Remove it when it expires. An out-of-date certificate on your site is worse than none.
