Turmeric finger buyers in the UAE: who buys and how to reach them

Short answerThe UAE is the second-largest market for Indian turmeric by volume, taking 20,740 tonnes in 2025-26, about 12% of India's turmeric exports. Buyers are mainly importers, packers and food manufacturers. Reach them through Gulfood, Spices Board meets and your own checked research, and be ready with a spec sheet, lab reports and label details, because the importer has to register the product before it can clear.

Key takeaways

  • The volume is real, but it moves. India shipped 20,740 tonnes of turmeric to the UAE in 2025-26, after 25,136 tonnes the year before [1].
  • Your buyer's first job is paperwork. A UAE importer has to register the product and get the label approved [2].
  • Help with that and you stand out. Send what they need before they ask.
  • Be wary of buyer lists. Check any name yourself before you write to it.

How big is the UAE market for Indian turmeric?

It is the second-largest by volume, after Bangladesh. These are Spices Board's figures for leading destinations, in tonnes [1]:

Destination 2023-24 2024-25 2025-26
Bangladesh 37,577 34,073 25,217
UAE 17,316 25,136 20,740
Morocco 7,826 9,390 10,800
Malaysia 8,466 8,826 9,186
USA 8,603 8,536 9,091

The UAE took about 12% of India's 175,896 tonnes in 2025-26 [1]. These figures cover all turmeric, because the published data doesn't separate fingers from powder.

Volume isn't the same as value. The UAE paid about USD 1.62 per kg on average in 2025-26, against about USD 4.01 per kg for the USA [1]. That average mixes every form and grade, so treat it as a clue about the market, not as a price.

Not all of it stays in the UAE. Dubai Municipality runs a separate release service for food consignments going for re-export [3]. So ask each buyer where the goods end up, because the final market can set the spec.

Who buys turmeric fingers in the UAE?

Three kinds of company usually buy whole turmeric. Each one needs something different from you:

Buyer What they do with it What to lead with
Importer or trader Resell in bulk, locally or onward Price, lot consistency and shipping dates
Spice packer or grinder Grind and pack under a brand Curcuminoid value, colour and clean lab reports
Food manufacturer Use it as an ingredient Specification, food safety system and supply over a year

Decide which one you want before you search. CBI's advice for the spice trade is the same: define your offer and choose a buyer type first [5].

How do you find them?

Use routes where you can check who you are talking to. We don't print a list of names here, because a name in an old shipping record doesn't show who is buying today. These routes give you current leads:

  • Gulfood. It runs from 15 to 19 March 2027 in Dubai. Our Gulfood 2027 plan covers what to prepare.
  • Spices Board meets. The Board organises Buyer Seller Meets, so watch its calendar for Gulf events [4].
  • Your own research. Look at spice brands on UAE retail shelves and online stores, and find who packs them. Then contact the purchasing team.
  • Trade data services. Paid shipment records can show who imported 0910 30 lately. Treat them as leads to check, not as proof of demand.
  • Your own website. Our guide to finding spice buyers covers seven routes in order.

How do you check a UAE company?

Check before you send a sample, and again before you agree credit terms. It takes ten minutes:

  • Look up the licence. The UAE government lists free official channels, including the National Economic Register and each emirate's economic department [6]. Ask the buyer for their trade licence and compare the name and activity. A company in a free zone may need checking with that free zone.
  • Match the email. The domain should match the company's website.
  • Check the business. Confirm that the licence covers food or spices, and that the person writing to you works there.

Our guide to what buyers check shows the same test from the other side.

What does a UAE importer need from you?

The importer does the registration, but they rely on your documents. USDA's 2023 report on UAE food imports describes this process for Dubai [2]. It was written for US exporters and may have changed, so confirm the details with your importer.

  • Product registration. The importer registers each product through the ZAD, ZADI or FIRS portal, with health and laboratory certificates.
  • Each pack size counts. A 100 g pack and a 200 g pack are separate items and must be registered separately.
  • Lab testing. A new product needs testing at Dubai Municipality's Central Laboratory. Results can take up to five working days.
  • Label assessment. The importer uploads the label for approval before applying to import.
  • Inspection. Goods may be inspected on arrival to confirm that they match the records.

What must the label show?

The labelling rules apply to bulk packs as well as retail packs [2]. The standard is UAE.S GSO 9:2019. Check these before you print:

  • Arabic. Labels must be in Arabic, and any other language must carry identical information.
  • Stickers. An Arabic sticker is allowed if the authorities approve it first. It must be a single sticker, applied before export.
  • Dates. Production and expiry dates must be on the original packaging. A date printed only on a sticker isn't accepted.
  • Batch. The production lot number must be declared.
  • Origin and storage. Show the country of origin and any special storage conditions.

What should your first message include?

Make it easy to say yes to a sample. Keep the email short, and attach:

  • a one-page turmeric finger spec sheet;
  • your most recent lab report for a real lot;
  • a quotation they can compare, if they gave you enough detail to price;
  • a line offering label details for their registration.

Here is a short version to adapt:

Questions exporters ask

How much turmeric does India export to the UAE?

Spices Board figures show 20,740 tonnes in 2025-26, down from 25,136 tonnes in 2024-25. The figures cover all turmeric, not fingers alone.

Is there a list of turmeric buyers in the UAE?

Importer lists are sold, but treat any list as unverified until you have checked each company. We don't publish one, because a name in a shipping record doesn't show that a company is buying now.

Does turmeric need Arabic labels for the UAE?

USDA's report says labels must be in Arabic, and that any other language must match the Arabic. Stickers are allowed if the authorities approve them first and they go on before export. Packs for institutional use can enter without Arabic, but can't then be sold in retail stores.

What duty does the UAE charge on Indian turmeric?

We couldn't confirm a rate from an official source. Ask your importer, who pays it, and check the India-UAE CEPA schedule for your exact tariff line.

Does Spices Board require testing for turmeric going to the UAE?

Its 2023 list of mandatory tests has no UAE entry for whole turmeric. That doesn't set your buyer's requirements, so ask them which tests and limits they want.
